Facebook Data

Facebook shares fell more than 4% in premarket trading today after media reports that a political consultancy that worked on President Trump’s campaign was able to obtain inappropriate access to data on 50 million Facebook users.

According to Reuters, the move knocked $23.8 billion dollars off the social network’s market value of $538 billion as of Friday’s close.

The report also quoted one Wall Street analyst saying that the reports raised “systemic problems” with Facebook’s business model and a number said it could spur far deeper regulatory scrutiny of the platform.

This all comes after news announce Friday that Facebook suspended the account of Cambridge Analytica, the political data company backed by the billionaire Robert Mercer that consulted on both the Brexit and Trump campaigns.

Over the weekend, both The Guardian and The New York Times penned major reports in which the whistleblower Christopher Wylie alleged that Cambridge Analytica had used data that an academic had allegedly improperly exfiltrated from Facebook.

Happy Friday.

Reuters is reporting that nearly two dozen major companies in technology and other industries are planning to launch a coalition to demand legislation that would allow young, illegal immigrants a path to permanent residency.

The Coalition for the American Dream intends to ask Congress to pass bipartisan legislation this year that would allow these immigrants, often referred to as “Dreamers,” to continue working in the United States, the documents said.

Alphabet Inc’s Google, Microsoft Corp, Facebook Inc, Intel Corp, Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL], IBM Corp, Marriott International Inc and other top U.S. companies are listed as members, one of the documents shows.

Reuters continues by asserting that the push for this legislation comes after U.S. President Donald Trump’s September decision to allow the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to expire in March

“Dreamers are part of our society, defend our country, and support our economy,” said one of the coalition documents, which is being shared by the group to recruit additional companies.

A Bit of a Bitcoin

with one comment

Happy Thursday.

CNBC is reporting that Bitcoin has gone back into freefall, down 7 percent after one of the biggest Bitcoin exchanges in China indicated it would be shutting down its operation.

BTC China said it will close by September 30th, as Chinese authorities crack down on cryptocurrencies.

Earlier this month, China regulators banned companies from raising money through initial coin offerings, or “ICOs,” and since that time, Bitcoin has fallen some 20 percent.

Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin had this to say:

“Consistent with the administration’s commitment to take all actions necessary to ensure the protection of U.S. national security, the president issued an order prohibiting the acquisition.”

Lattice shares were down as much as 1.7 percent on the blocked sale.

According to Bloomberg’s report, Lattice makes programmable logic chips which have a vaiety of uses, including in communications, computing and industrial and military applications.

President-elect Trump’s New “Secure, Encrypted” Device

leave a comment »

Well, we’re only a couple of hours away from President-elect Trump’s inauguration as the 45th president of the United States of America.

Like President Obama before him, Mr. Trump is alleged to be “trading in” the Android phone (one that has helped make his Tweets so famous) for a Secret Service-approved smartphone.

President Obama, of course, was forced to give up his beloved Blackberry upon ascending to the presidency. Anybody remember Blackberry??

No real details seem to have emerged about President-elect Trump’s new device. It is, of course, Secret-Service issued, so the details remain secret. That’s the way that whole thing works.

I just sure hope somebody load the Twitter app before handing it over to the new president. Otherwise, we could see our first scandal of the new administration, and our first “You’re fired!”
